There's a House Inside My Mummy

Author: Giles Andreae
Illustrator: Vanessa Cabban
Publisher: Orchard

This rhyming book is narrated by a small boy, who describes his mother’s pregnancy in a positive and simple childlike way (‘There’s a house inside my mummy, where my little brother grows, or maybe it’s my little sister no-one really knows’.) The boy explains that he used to live in the house. He doesn’t remember being there, but he knows it’s a warm and cosy place with a sort of giant bathtub inside where the baby sleeps. The baby needs lots of room to grow, so his mummy’s tummy is getting bigger every day. He wishes his mummy’s tummy had windows so he could see the baby inside. He likes to cuddle up and feel the baby kicking, or tell the baby he loves him through the ‘tummy telephone’. The book describes some common aspects of pregnancy (food cravings, tiredness) in a way that won’t make a young child anxious. At the end of the book the eagerly awaited baby brother arrives. The boy explains that there’s no baby in mummy’s tummy now…until she makes another!
