Why Should I Help?

Author: Claire Llewellyn
Illustrator: Mike Gordon
Publisher: Wayland

Susy complains that every day in her house there are many jobs to be done: making the beds, feeding the pets, clearing away the breakfast, laying the table, washing up, and helping to run the baby’s bath. Sometimes she doesn’t feel like helping, and wants to do more interesting things. She wonders why she should help other people. Dad explains that everyone needs help now and again, and reminds her of the time she fell of her bike and a nice boy helped her to get home. And how Mum cycled home in the rain to fetch the costume Susy had forgotten to bring to the party. When Squeaky the rabbit escaped, her family searched for him all afternoon. Susy realises why it’s good to help others, and starts to go out of her way to assist those in need. This makes her feel grown up and gives her a good feeling inside. She realises that there’s often an extra bonus with helping too, for example, when Susy does her Gran’s shopping, Gran has time to make her some pancakes. Susy asks the reader to give someone a helping hand, and who knows, the next person to need help might be you!
