The New Baby (Usborne First Experiences)

Author: Anne Civardi
Illustrator: Stephen Cartwright
Publisher: Usborne Publishing Ltd

This book is written in simple language that young children will be able to understand. Stephen Cartwright’s appealing illustrations depict the new baby’s arrival in a positive light, with the children getting involved in preparations before the birth and helping out with baby care afterwards, and the mother breastfeeding the new baby with her older children surrounding her. Mrs Bunn is expecting a baby soon. Granny and Granpa come to stay to look after the Bunn children (5-year old Lucy and 3-year old Tom) while Mrs Bunn is in hospital. The whole family prepare for the new arrival by decorating the nursery together. Lucy uses the baby’s bath to wash her doll. One night, Mrs Bunn feels the baby coming and Mr Bunn takes her to hospital. Their baby girl is born and is weighed, measured and wrapped in a blanket. Mr Bunn tells his children about their new sister and they excitedly go to visit her in hospital. Their mum is in a ward with other women, including one who has twins. Mrs Bunn and baby Susie come home the next day. Mrs Bunn is tired and will need a lot of help from her family. Mrs Bunn breastfeeds the baby and Mr Bunn gives her a bath (the children help). They all go out for a family walk and are very excited about the baby.
