Hey! What's That Nasty Whiff?

Author: Julie Jarman
Illustrator: Garry Parsons
Publisher: Scholastic

“Hyena was a cleaner, she kept things spick and span. She picked up after others with a little brush and pan”. Hyena worked tirelessly keeping the African savannah spotless and orderly for the other animals that lived there. As well as the ‘housework’, she made sure that the recycling and composting was attended to, and grew food responsibly. Despite her efforts, no-one seemed to notice how clean everything was. Feeling sad and lonely, she hid under a tree and cried. A vulture flew over and sympathised with Hyena (Vulture was also fed up with ‘cleaning up’ after the animals). They decided to ‘go on strike’ in the hope that the other residents may begin to appreciate them, and headed off on holiday in a hot air balloon. Gradually, the animals left behind in the Savannah began to notice a horrible smell (caused by the poo that nobody was cleaning up), and were disturbed by the piles of rubbish building up everywhere. They sent Flamingo to plead with Hyena and Vulture to come back. At first Hyena was keen to return immediately, but Vulture persuaded her to first get the other animals to put in writing their promise to help recycle and clean. All the animals signed the contract and helped deliver it to Vulture and Hyena.

Things we liked:

We loved the witty rhymes in this book, and the children we read this to found the gentle toilet homour very funny!
