I Can Make a Difference: A First Look at Setting a Good Example

Author: Pat Thomas
Illustrator: Lesley Harker
Publisher: Wayland

The book opens by explaining that everyone in the world is a teacher, and everyone learns by example, therefore it is very important to treat others how we would like to be treated ourselves. We should be caring to our family, friends and home, say ‘please’ and ‘thankyou’, never call names and always help others (particularly those who are smaller and weaker). The book acknowledges that while nobody is perfect, we should all learn to say sorry. Good behaviour is a choice we make, and has a positive impact on everyone around us. The book concludes by likening being kind and polite to planting seeds in a garden: “The more you plant, the more beautiful the garden will become.”

Things we liked:

Pleasant illustrations showing children from various ethnic backgrounds and also children with physical disabilities.

Worth noting:

This non-fiction picture book is written by psychotherapist and counsellor Pat Thomas.
