Going Shopping (Why Manners Matter)

This book gives a view of many of the things important when going out shopping while also providing good examples of the little things that can make life much more agreeable for everyone both on the way to the shops and when buying things. It is written in language that children can easily understand.

Going Shopping (Why Manners Matter)

Author: Jillian Powell
Illustrator:
Publisher: Franklin Watts

The book touches upon a number of situations and issues important for a trip to the shops. This is followed by advice on using public transport: ‘Waiting for the bus’ (queue and don’t push), and “‘Take care’(don’t cross roads without an adult). The next issues and situations covered are ‘Being helpful’(e.g. help to carry the bags), ‘Magic words’ (please and thank you), ‘Be patient’ (wait for your turn), ‘Tidying up’ (don’t drop litter), ‘Being polite’ (offer your seat to the elderly) and ‘A smile’ (be friendly to shop assistants). Finally there is a synopsis of important things to remember. Each issue is illustrated with photographs and most not only include advice but also a question which the children should answer, such as: “What would happen if no-one bothered to use the litter bins?” This provides food for thought.

Things we liked:

Well selected photographs which underline the messages clearly.

Worth noting:

The book does not contain a story, nor is there a thread linking the different issues. It is rather a book of advice for children, written in a way that is easy to understand.
