I Don’t Want Curly Hair!

This fun tale will resonate with any child who might hanker after physical attributes they don’t have, for example, straight or curly hair. But it may also help children who feel different for other reasons, and will reassure a child that many people feel that way sometimes. The story reminds us that friendships can often be based on our differences, and that variety is a good thing.

I Don't Want Curly Hair!

Author: Laura Ellen Anderson
Illustrator: Laura Ellen Anderson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Childrens

This is a quirky and amusing rhyming story about a little girl who doesn’t like her curly hair.  She tells the reader all about the reasons she finds her hair silly and annoying: it’s knotty, fuzzy, frizzy and loopy, and the little girl goes to great lengths to straighten it, using all sorts of funny methods. She tries brushing and pulling, and books and balloons. She even uses tape and water to make her hair behave the way she wants it to. But nothing works.

The little girl is thoroughly fed up, at which point she meets another child who has straight hair and guess what? She doesn’t like it, and has tried all sorts of methods to curl it (“…twisting and spinning and rolling pins, too”). The girls admire each other’s hair, and realise how silly they have been. They start to see the merits of their own styles, and then enjoy experimenting with their locks and swapping top tips.

In the end, both girls realise that they love their hair!

Things we liked:

The use of clever, funny rhymes makes this a very enjoyable book to read out loud, time and again.

Worth noting:

This is a very positive and encouraging book that many adults will also relate to – and spreads the important message that we should try to love what we have.
