Rooster wore skinny jeans

Author: Jessie Miller
Illustrator: Barbara Bakos
Publisher: Maverick

“I wanted these jeans, and I bought them for me.”
“Their opinions don’t matter. I’ll show them! They’ll see!”

Rooster is excited to receive a pair of very skinny jeans in the post. When the other farmyard animals begin to ridicule him, he begins to doubt himself and hides away from their laughter. However, he soon realises that he bought the jeans because he liked them and not for anyone else. Strutting out, proudly, the other animals soon see how confident Rooster is and how great his jeans look and are full of admiration.

By using rhyming couplets throughout the book, the author creates a sing-song quality to the tale. Eye-catching illustrations draw the in the eye, whilst the use of cheeky, fun language that will entertain young children, adds to its humour. The message that we can be ourselves is clearly and humorously made.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • Being different from everyone else can be scary for a child.
  • Rooster tries to hide away from the other animal’s laughter because he is embarrassed by his appearance and begins to doubt himself.

Guidance:

It is easy to become afraid and embarrassed when others are ridiculing you for being different, but hiding away didn’t make Rooster feel any better.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • Rooster loved his jeans and soon realised that he bought them for himself, and that his opinion is most important for him.
  • Wearing his jeans with pride made the other animals see how confident he was, and soon realised how great Rooster looked.
  • The farmyard animals all admired Rooster’s confidence and style.
  • Rooster was proud of who he was.
