By the Light of the Moon

This lovely picture book by Tom Percival acknowledges that it can be difficult for children to move to a new home, and serves as a gentle reminder that it takes time to get used to new situations.

By the Light of the Moon by Tom Percival

“Moving house is a BIG thing for most people. And so it was for Ivan…”

A small boy (Ivan) is spending his first night in a new house, which feels strange. He’s missing his ‘warm and friendly’ old home. He’s visited by a ‘small furry something’ (a Moji) who uses his magical moonlight paintbrush to bring Ivan’s new garden alive and make Ivan fly. He takes him on an amazing moonlit journey up to the stars, under the water and through deep forests , then finally back to the new house, where Moji paints the word ‘home’ across the sky. At first Ivan isn’t convinced that this strange place will ever feel like home, but when Moji paints some happy pictures of Ivan enjoying himself there he begins to understand that one day soon, it will.

Tom Percival is brilliant at combining comfort and magic in his picture books and ‘By the Light of the Moon’ is no exception. A lovely reassuring book with a simple helpful message, beautifully illustrated.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • It can be hard for children to adapt to moving to a new house (and other new situations). Ivan finds his first night in his new house particularly challenging. He can’t sleep and his new bedroom feels cold and strange.

Guidance:

  • Give it time:  One day a new house will feel like home; there will be happy memories there.
