AdoraBull

Author: Alison Donald
Illustrator: Alex Willmore
Publisher: Maverick

Tom and his bull Alfred are the best of friends. They are inseparable. Until, that is, Tom starts school, at which point, Tom asks his parents for a new pet – one that is cute, snuggly and totally adorable.

Alfred is put out, and finds himself looking up “adorable pets” on the internet. He thinks hamsters in swings and puppies in teacups are ridiculous. But he tries to help Tom out by becoming more adorable himself, only to be ridiculed by the other animals. This makes Alfred sad.

At the end of the book, Tom approaches Alfred with a surprise – a kitten! It’s a friend for Alfred whilst Tom is at school, and that is what Tom has been searching for all along! Alfred the bull and the adorable kitten are inseparable, and keep each other company until Tom returns home -when they can all be adorable together!

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

This book recognises that separation is hard, especially for very close friends like Alfred and Tom.

Sometimes, actions can be misconstrued, rather like Tom’s search for a new, adorable pet.

Guidance:

Tom comes up with a clever plan to help his friend Alfred whilst he is away at school – a new little friend to keep him company!

Hope & Inspiration:

Even though Alfred has a tough time initally, missing Tom, and then worrying that Tom is trying to replace him with a more cute, more adorable friend, in the end, he realises that Tom is only trying to make him happy, and with his new kitten pal, Alfred is content whilst his best mate is elsewhere.
