Under the Love Umbrella

A book to comfort 'anyone who has ever felt lonely, lost or alone'. Useful for children who are experiencing separation anxiety or loneliness, it sends the comforting message that wherever you are, you are loved.

Under the Love Umbrella

Author: Davina Francesca Bell
Illustrator: Allison Colpoys
Publisher: Scribe UK

‘Whatever you fear, come close my dear
You’re tucked in safe for always here
And I will never not be near
Because of our love umbrella’

Written in the form of a gentle poem, the book introduces the idea of a ‘love umbrella’: an invisible source of protection, love and comfort which is always there, up in the stars. When you’re feeling sad, shy or lonely, things don’t go quite as planned, or times are troubling (the author lists bad dreams, smashed toys, lost teeth, wet pants, and big worries amongst other things) the love umbrella is always there for you, wherever you might be, to show that you are being thought of.

Beautifully illustrated by Allison Colpoys in a zingy palette of fluorescent colours, there are plenty of different challenging scenarios depicted that children should enjoy chatting about.

The messages we found in this book:

Guidance:

  • The people that you love can’t be with you all the time, but their love can be with you constantly, providing comfort and reassurance.
  • Having something to visualise and imagine, like a ‘love umbrella’, can help you feel less alone when you’re facing challenges and worrying times.

What is a Parachute Book?

A challenging experience can make a young child feel as if they are in emotional free fall. As a parent, you can’t stop them falling, but you can offer them a softer landing:
a Parachute Book.
