The Christmas Extravaganza Hotel

The Frog in the story learns that doing simple festive activities with a friend can be as much (if not more) fun than a lavish, all-singing-all-dancing Christmas. The Bear who welcomes Frog into his home is generous and considerate.

The Christmas Extravaganza Hotel

Author: Tracey Corderoy
Illustrator: Tony Neal
Publisher: Little Tiger Press

A very excited frog turns up on Bear’s doorstep clutching a brochure. He’s arrived for the ‘Christmas EXTRAVAGANZA’ experience. Bear gently explains to him that his map is upside down and he’s on the wrong side of the world, but kindly invites him to stay for Christmas anyway.

Bear is worried that the simple and quiet pastimes he can offer (snowball fights, baking, real snow-covered trees, and looking for reindeer) won’t match up to the supersonic sleigh rides, singing trees and spectacular light shows that Frog’s brochure boasts. However, Frog is far from disappointed, declaring his winter wonderland adventure with Bear (complete with a stunning Northern Lights finale) is ‘the BEST’, and hopes he can return the following year for more fun.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • Bear is happy with his simple lifestyle until he sees the sophisticated entertainment that is promised in Frog’s brochure. He then worries that Frog will be disappointed.

Guidance:

  • It’s fun to get outside in the fresh air and surround yourself with wildlife and greenery.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • Bear is very kind to Frog, inviting him to stay for Christmas and trying very hard to provide him with enjoyable activities.
  • Frog is adaptable and open-minded: he has been looking forward to seeing and doing all the amazing things offered by the Christmas Extravaganza Hotel, and Bear’s pastimes are quite different from these. But he goes along with them, and discovers that he is having a lot of fun.
  • Frog has a brilliant Christmas because he spends time with a new friend. The fun comes from shared positive experiences, not from spending a lot of money.
