Real Superheroes

Author: Julia Seal
Illustrator: Julia Seal
Publisher: DK Children

Who are the real superheroes that keep our world safe? The key workers, of course, who keep looking after us during challenging times. This lovely picture book celebrates and applauds them all – including supermarket staff, delivery drivers, refuse collectors, firefighters, police officers, teachers, doctors, nurses and paramedics. The child who narrates this pleasingly-illustrated rhyming story aspires to be a key worker one day, and there is a nod to all those ‘invisible heroes’ who care for others.

This video link is provided to help an adult assess the book's suitability for a child's situation before purchasing it. It has been filmed by a third party and hosted on YouTube and is not made by Little Parachutes. More info

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • Many ‘real superheroes’, such as child carers, often go unnoticed, but should be respected and appreciated just as much as the more public-facing ones.

Guidance:

  • The world is full of ‘real superheroes’; they may not wear a cape or be written about in comic books, but they are vital to our wellbeing and should be celebrated.
  • Anybody can be a ‘superhero’ by being kind and caring, and thinking of others.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • The child in the story is inspired to become a key worker when they grow up. They feel strongly that they want to help others.

What is a Parachute Book?

A challenging experience can make a young child feel as if they are in emotional free fall. As a parent, you can’t stop them falling, but you can offer them a softer landing:
a Parachute Book.
