Coronavirus: A book for Children about Covid-19

Author: Elizabeth Jenner, Kate Wilson, Nia Roberts
Illustrator: Axel Scheffler
Publisher: Nosy Crow

Probably the most well-known of the free Coronavirus e-books, this impressively comprehensive yet friendly book was written in consultation with Professor Graham Medley of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, as well as teachers and child psychologists. It clearly and honestly answers the questions that children are likely to have on all aspects of the Coronavirus pandemic, and provides suggestions for things that children can do to help out. Axel Scheffler’s distinctive illustrative style and the down-to-earth simple explanations provided by the three authors keep the tone of the book from sliding into a frightening place. Highly recommended.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • It is normal to feel worried or sad about the virus.
  • While spending more time with the people you live with can sometimes be fun, you may feel bored, sad or angry at other times.

Guidance:

  • There is SO much information packed into this book, explaining what Coronavirus is, how you catch it and how it spreads, how it effects different people’s health, why people are worried about it and what impact it has on all of us day to day (including having to stay at home, social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands).  It also covers what is being done to find a cure (including a good explanation of what vaccines and antibodies are).
  • Talking about your feelings to a trusted grown up is recommended.
  • Try to be kind to people, avoid fighting with brothers and sisters, be considerate to adults when they’re trying to work and get stuck into school work.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • Everyone can make a difference –  you can help to minimise the spread of the virus and make life easier for those around you by making small changes.
  • “One day, this strange time will be over” – hugs, visits and playdates will return, but no-one knows exactly when.
  • The way to get through the pandemic is to work together.
