Many Ways To Share A Hug

Author: Australian Childhood Foundation
Illustrator: Jess Racklyeft
Publisher: Australian Childhood Foundation

Coronavirus is getting in the way of giving hugs, and the hugs  are not happy about it – they’re needed more now than ever! This delightful free e-picture book, produced by the Australian Childhood Foundation and illustrated by Jess Racklyeft,  personifies hugs into cute little fluffy creatures, who work together as a team to keep love and good wishes circulating, despite the need to put physical hugs on hold for a little while (although it is made clear that people sharing a home are still allowed to hug). Hugs are re-defined in many different ways that don’t involve wrapping  your arms around another person – by being kind and thoughtful, connecting and sharing, and keeping a sense of humour. The positive actions of key workers are also described as hugs, which is a nice touch. The final page of the book provides instructions so that a  child can make their own hug out of cotton wool and other easily located craft supplies.

What is a Parachute Book?

A challenging experience can make a young child feel as if they are in emotional free fall. As a parent, you can’t stop them falling, but you can offer them a softer landing:
