Acknowledges the challenges that children may face during the Coronavirus pandemic (missing hugs and activities, freedom to mix and play, etc.)

Stuck Inside

Author: Dan and Kathryn Allman
Illustrator: Lisa Johnstone
Publisher: Independently published

“In 2020 an awful virus crept across our planet”.

Quite a sinister opening to this little picture book by Dan and Kathryn Allman, which might alarm a nervous child a little. However, the tone of the story is pretty positive, and concludes with a strong message of hope: you’re not alone, and this will come to an end. Some aspects of the story no longer apply (it mentions how we clapped for the doctors and nurses every week). A good book to explain to children the reasons why it’s so important to wash your hands and keep your distance (to protect the vulnerable, make it easier for the health services, and to stop the spread of the disease). The Kindle version of this book is available free of charge from Amazon.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • A child is likely to be missing lots of things they previously enjoyed the freedom to do: hug their friends and extended family, take part freely in clubs and activities, interact and play with other children without restrictions.

Guidance:

  • The virus may be invisible to you, but you can carry it and pass it to others, even if you don’t feel unwell.
  • Sticking to the rules set by the authorities and washing your hands with soap and water can help keep you and others safe.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • The pandemic won’t last forever (“This will come to an end”). One day we will be able to re-unite with our friends.

What is a Parachute Book?

A challenging experience can make a young child feel as if they are in emotional free fall. As a parent, you can’t stop them falling, but you can offer them a softer landing:
