Milo’s Monster

This is another book in the Big Bright Feelings series by this author which deals with friendship, jealousy and what happens when a new friend comes along. It looks at what happens when the friendship dynamic changes and how to deal with this in a child friendly way.

Milo’s Monster by Tom Percival

Author: Tom Percival
Illustrator: Tom Percival
Publisher: Bloomsbury

“Nothing could beat the feeling of having a best friend.”
“A funny feeling squirmed around in Milo’s tummy.”
“What if Jay didn’t want to be best friends with him anymore?”

Milo and Jay have always been best friends and they live on the same street.  One day a new girl, Suzi,  moves in across the road. Initially Milo is pleased but then his friend Jay goes round to play with her and is having lots of fun, without him!  Milo has a funny, squirmy feeling in his stomach and then… a green eyed monster appears.  The monster says all the negative things that Milo is thinking and Milo decides to stop seeing Jay and Suzi at all and is all alone.  One day Suzi taps him on the shoulder and asks why he isn’t friends with Jay any more. Milo decides to get rid of the pesky green eyed monster as he realizes the monster has nearly spoiled everything and is able to say sorry to Jay. In the end the three become friends again.
Another lovely and very helpful book by Tom Percival in his Big Bright Feelings series.  Almost everyone can say they have encountered friendship situations that they find difficult and this book can help start a discussion with a child who might be having worries about their friendships.  It always helps to know that other people feel this way too and that it is ok to have these feelings.  I like the fact that physical feelings associated with jealousy are mentioned as I think this is very relevant to children.  The illustrations are lovely and realistic for the range of emotions the characters are feeling.  The story has a positive ending with the new friend helping the two boys to mend their relationship.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

• Everyone has friendship problems sometimes – relationships can be repaired
• Emotions can give you uncomfortable feelings in your body
• Friendships can change and that is OK

Guidance:

• Milo’s negative thoughts turn out not to be true – letting children know that thoughts are not facts
• Talking to your friends and saying sorry is important

Hope & Inspiration:

• You can be in charge of your emotions and can change how you feel and act
• Milo gets support from the new friend to help repair his friendship with his long term friend Jay
• The children end on a positive note “Milo smiled. Nothing could beat the feeling of having a best friend – except having two of them!
