Lulu Gets a Cat

This picture book helps children to understand the reality of pet ownership, showing that it involves hard work, consideration and patience, but it is also fun and rewarding.

Lulu Gets a Cat by Anna McQuinn

Author: Anna McQuinn
Illustrator: Rosalind Beardshaw
Publisher: Alanna Books

“Mummy says looking after a cat is lots of work.”

Lulu really wants a cat.  She shows Mummy how responsible she is by finding out about cats and how to care for them, and at last Mummy agrees that Lulu can adopt a cat of her own. They visit a shelter (a cat chooses her!) and they prepare their home for her and buy the equipment they need. When their cat (who Lulu names Makeda) arrives she is nervous and is not ready to play; Lulu gives her time and space. Gradually, Makeda settles in and Lulu and her friend have a lot of fun playing with her. Lulu falls in love with her new pet and enjoys cuddling up with her at bed-time. This is a very appealing picture book featuring a black family with lovely colourful illustrations and clear minimal text suitable for very young children.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • Children may be impatient to play with a new pet, but it is important to give them time and space to settle in.

Guidance:

  • Settling into a new home can be frightening for a cat. Lulu’s family give Makeda her familiar blanket which makes her feel safe.
  • Owning a cat can be hard work but can be very rewarding. Pets need regular care.
Worth noting:

There is a note at the beginning of the book which has a link to further information on adopting a cat, provided by the Cats Protection League (http://www.cats.org.uk/learn). This title was included in the 2018 Read for Empathy Guide (https://www.empathylab.uk/empathybookcollection), as ‘understanding pets’ feelings and needs can help children develop their empathy muscles.’.
