Playing in the Park (Why Manners Matter)

This book covers the important aspects of playing with others in the park. It provides good examples of the little things that can make life much more agreeable for everyone and that make no-one feel excluded. It is written in language that children can easily understand.

Playing in the Park (Why Manners Matter)

Author: Jillian Powell
Illustrator:
Publisher: Franklin Watts

The book touches upon a number of situations and issues important for a day in the playground, starting with a general overview “In the park”. This is followed by examples of situations in which the children are taught about co-operation: “Your turn, my turn”, “Waiting for your go” and “Sharing”. Other issues include “Being polite”, Saying sorry”, “Helping others”, “Keep it tidy” and “Staying safe.” Finally, there is a synopsis of important things to remember. Each issue is illustrated with photographs and most not only include advice but also a question which the children should answer, such as: “What would happen if everyone wanted to go down the slide at the same time?” This provides food for thought.

Things we liked:

Well selected photographs which underline the messages clearly.

Worth noting:

The book does not contain a story, nor is there a thread linking the different issues. It is instead a book of advice for children, written in a way that is easy to understand.
