Red Red Red

A relatable story which captures both in text and illustration the buildup of frustrations toddlers can feel until all they see is red and the dissipation of these feelings by counting to ten.

Red Red Red

Author: Polly Dunbar
Illustrator: Polly Dunbar
Publisher: Walker Books

Little One, the toddler, is trying to get a biscuit. Frustration builds as Little One tries to reach the biscuit jar and falls, their clothes get twisted, they can’t get the lid off the jar; to them everything is wrong. Represented as a red scribble in the illustrations, frustration and anger lead to a tantrum and Little One seeing red.

Mum acknowledges their feelings and suggests they count to 10 instead. As they count from 1 to 10 the anger begins to disappear resulting in Little One calming, straightening their clothes and eating a biscuit. The story finishes with a feeling of calm and closeness for Little One and their Mum.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • It is frustrating when things don’t go how you want them to. The buildup of these feelings can be overwhelming and lead you to see red.
  • It is common but not very helpful to have a tantrum.

Guidance:

  • The book offers counting to 10 as a method of letting go of angry emotions.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • Little One calms their feelings by counting to 10.
  • Little One feels connected to their Mum after she acknowledges their feelings and guides them with counting to 10, shown by giving Mum a biscuit and telling her “I love you too”.
