Tad is the smallest tadpole in the whole pond, and has to work twice as hard as the others to keep up. Her brothers and sisters warn her about Big Blub (a ‘great big nasty fish’ who lurks in the darkest places). One by one, the tadpoles turn into frogs, with strong enough legs to escape potential predators. Soon enough, Tad is the only tadpole left…but she is clever and strong and knows where to hide away from danger…until one day, Big Blub appears from nowhere! In the nick of time, Tad discovers her frog’s legs and swims up to safety. The final illustration shows Tad leaping above the water through lush vegetation, towards her brothers and sisters.

The messages we found in this book:
Acknowledgement:
- It’s not easy when you’re the smallest; you can feel excluded and lonely. It can be difficult to wait patiently to grow.
Guidance:
- Sometimes you have to alter your behaviour to adapt to new circumstances. Tad used her brains and knowledge of the pond to hide from Big Blub.
Hope & Inspiration:
- Tad may have been the smallest but she was clever and immensely brave.
