Grumpy Frog

A thoroughly entertaining and engaging book which explores some important themes: forgiveness, tolerance, co-operation, and how moods and behaviour affects others.

Grumpy Frog

Author: Ed Vere
Illustrator: Ed Vere
Publisher: Puffin

Frog is a happy chap when things are going his way. But when things get more challenging (such as when he doesn’t win the hopping race) he gets VERY grumpy. Ed Vere has used colours to represent diversity in this book. Frog LOVES green (it ‘rocks his world’) and he is happy within his little green comfort zone – leave, grass and frogs! But he has no time for other colours: red makes him cross, blue makes him cry and brown is boring. Frog’s intolerance of anyone or anything different to himself means he finds it hard to get along with others, and he quickly finds himself with no playmates. A close-call with a crocodile makes Frog recognise that being rude and judgemental about others will not lead to happiness.

Ed Vere has perfectly captured the personality and mood swings of frog in a few bold brush strokes. Children will be drawn to both the pictures and the child-like dialogue in the story. A gem of a book which is packed with important messages as well as being delightfully funny and absorbing.

The messages we found in this book:

Acknowledgement:

  • Everyone feels grumpy sometimes, it is normal.
  • It can be very hard to shake off a bad mood.
  • It is easy to be well-behaved and happy when things are going YOUR way…it’s harder when you face a challenging time or an obstacle.

Guidance:

  • You can control whether or not to take a bad mood out on others.
  • Joining in and co-operating is more enjoyable than sulking on your own.
  • Saying sorry and asking for forgiveness is a good thing.
  • We don’t all have to look or act the same to get along.
  • Diversity should be celebrated.

Hope & Inspiration:

  • Frog feels and shows regret for how he has behaved. He apologises humbly and makes amends with his friends. They welcome him back into their games without bearing any grudges. He shows signs of starting to compromise.
  • It was hard for Frog to admit he made bad choices and upset his friends, but he found the strength to do just that. He starts to show more self-awareness and makes a real effort to embrace his friend’s ideas and wishes.
